Q1. When did you start Rallying: First Rally was the 2012 Circuit of Kerry in a beautifully prepared Honda Civic, and the Honourable Kevin Savage (the Tall one) sitting in with me.
Q2. What was your best moment in Rallying: My Best Moment in Rallying was passing two cars on my very first Rally stage, Headley’s Bridge, followed shortly after by my Worst Moment in Rallying, getting stuck in a mucky drain on Desmond’s Grave, at least I have a corner named after me now.
Q3. What are your plans for the Circuit of Kerry 2014: Plans for this Circuit of Kerry? Well, this is my first time driving a rear wheel drive (except for my Hiace) so, I’d hope to be looking out the front and side windows a lot more than the back window, and to get the car home in one piece, maybe have a bit (a lot) of fun along the way. I won’t be chasing any sort of honours, I won’t even be looking at the time sheets, just Finnish and Fun.
Q4. Anything else you want to say about Rallying? ‘ve been following rallying since I was big enough to hang around the service area or sit on a ditch watching Dad. It took me a long time to get around to doing a Rally and I have to say to anyone who’s thinking about it, there are plenty of people renting good cars and giving a great package (West Cavan Rally Hire) so get off the ditch, organise your licence and get your helmet on, it’s way better in the car than on the sideline.The Circuit of Kerry is the ideal place to start. Q2. What was your best moment in Rallying: Winning the Gp. N Tarmac Championship in ’03, followed by winning the Imokilly Rally last year.
Q3. What are your plans for the Circuit of Kerry 2014: Given the massive entry for the rally, if we can finish, thats the first requirement, then anywhere in the top 6 would be a great result for us, top 10 is probably more realistic though.
Q4. Funniest Moment in rallying? While doing Shanara in the Lakes one year, after the start there is a (flat!!) jump with a smaller jump afterwards, we took it flat in 6th, hit the second jump with the back of the car and it took off into the hedge, somehow the car came back onto the road, I was delighted with myself, and said over the intercom something to effect of “great save, well done, etc….” Greg Shinnors was in the boss’s chair that day, and all I got from him was “ Shut up and keep driving” ! It was funny afterwards, honest! At least I can laugh about it now 😉
Q5. Favourite Rally & Stage? Tough one, toss up between, Ypres/Manx/Lakes. Favourite stage is easier, Ardgroom, all day everyday!
Q6. Anything else you want to say about Rallying? Been around rallies all my life, following around my Dad, Sean, since I was a very small boy. Been hooked since then. I love the friendships and banter at the start of the stages. The help everyone attitude, the great amount of people who give of their free time so that tens of thousands of people can get enjoyement from it. The fierce competition, the never say die mentality.
